Time to Make the Feeders!

Sunday, December 6, 2015 was a beautiful day to be outdoors. With unseasonably warm temperatures and bright sunshine, the Young Naturalists Club spent their time enjoying this exceptional day. A favorite activity of the YNC at this time of year is the creation of pinecone bird feeders. Pinecones gathered during our November meeting were fully opened and ready to be stuffed with a mixture of cornmeal and lard and then encrusted with birdseed. The members went to work making many of these feeders. It was a great opportunity to work on this project at the picnic table outdoors as often, in years past, the craft was performed indoors while watching the snowflakes falling! Juliana, Scarlett and two charter members, Vanessa and Elizabeth created many substantial feeders to keep our backyard birds well satiated during the colder days to come.
The members concluded their day by filling bird feeders, picking up litter and hiking along the trails in the park. A special thank-you to the members of the Young Naturalists Club, who each month, through their efforts and enthusiasm for Nature, restore the park to the beautiful place they know it to be.
