From the Editor’s Nest – July/August 2025

by Jeanne Halton
“It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb that I am sure many of you have heard before. It came to my mind when board members of the GSBAS were discussing how we needs volunteers to help chair and volunteer at our events. Our GSBAS cannot work with only a few members. We need more members to come out and get involved with committees and events that we are trying to put in place! We are in need of people chairing/volunteering for the following positions:
- Education – create educational programs for children, teens & adults
- Programs – schedule speakers for our monthly meetings (we will help)
- Conservation – be aware of important conservation efforts & issues in our community. Keep us up to date on legislation that will impact our area.
- Hospitality – take charge of refreshments for our meetings
- Brookside Docents – supervise the park, pick up any trash on the trails & open the house to visitors. We need 2 people each open house. Hours of operation are Wednesdays and Sundays for 1-3 pm.
- Repair work at Brookside
If you are available to help, please contact us at: greatsouthbayaudubon@gmail.com.
In this edition, you will read about a recent bird walk and what birds were seen! You can read what our president, vice president, treasurer and Brookside director have to say. Learn about choosing the right binoculars for bird watching! Also, read the flyers with terrific events for you to attend! You will read about another favorite park or trail that I enjoy! (Reminder: If you have a favorite park, I would love to hear about it! I will include it in this part of the newsletter. Just tell me the name of the park and why you enjoy that park. Also, if you have any birding questions, email them to me at: gsbas.editor@gmail.com. )
Our GSBAS proverb should be, “It takes many volunteers to have an awesome organization!” Are you ready to do your part?

I love going to the beach because it is so beautiful and quiet beach with great views. I love walking along the water to the rocks and back-it’s a great workout. It’s fun looking for shells.
