From the Editor’s Nest – Sept/Oct 2025

by Jeanne Halton
Recently, I went to visit my 2 sons: my oldest son lives in Southern California and my youngest son lives outside of Denver, Colorado. Before I left for my trip, my friend Karen told me about the Merlin Bird ID app. This is a free mobile app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that helps identify birds by recording their sounds, analyzing photos, or answering questions about birds’ appearances and location. You can save the birds you heard or saw to the app. I downloaded the app and used it when I was in California and Colorado. It was so cool to be able to identify the birds I heard when I was out walking in these two states. It is also handy when you are in your own backyard! Check out the app!
In this edition, you will read about a recent bird walk to Connetquot State Park and what birds were seen! You can read what our president and our Brookside director have to say. Find out when and where our terrific bird/nature walk leaders will be having their walks! Learn about American Goldfinches. Check out another favorite park that I enjoy!Â
*Reminder: If you have a favorite park, I would love to hear about it! I will include it in this part of the newsletter. Just tell me the name of the park and why you enjoy that park. Also, if you have any birding questions, email them to me at: gsbas.editor@gmail.com.Â
**October 15 is due date for all articles and photos to be submitted for the November/December newsletter. Anything submitted after October 15 will be held for the next newsletter! Submit articles and photos to me at gsbas.editor@gmail.com.Â

I love going to the beach because it is so beautiful and quiet beach with great views. I love walking along the water to the rocks and back-it’s a great workout. It’s fun looking for shells.
