Editor’s Question: How can birds be protected from flying into windows?

Brooke: There are a few ways you can help birds see your windows. First, place your bird feeders no more than 3 feet from the nearest window to prevent birds from coming to feed at a high speed. This will decrease the likelihood of birds injuring themselves if they do hit your window. Otherwise, place your feeders no less than 10 feet away. A better solution is to place feeders directly on your windows.

Another solution is to make your windows more visible to birds. You can do this by having screens installed on the exterior of your windows. One other way, is to stick on the exterior of your windows, ready-made films or tape with dots (2” by 2” vertical and horizontal dot patterns work the best). To avoid nighttime collisions, close curtains, shades or blinds and limit exterior illumination.
